Comment by V on January 10, 2012 at 5:17 If you have a low to medium spec pc (1gb ram etc) I would recommend Ubuntu 10.10 ..NOT the latest version (11.xx ) because it is a bit bloaty with its "Unity" desktop. If you go with Ubuntu (which is definitely one of the best Linux I have - and I have had NO problems at all for the last year or so) and you plump for version 10.10 remember to configure that it DOES NOT upgrade.
Comment by Dania Me on January 9, 2012 at 22:44 I will agree with Ubuntu. Jolicloud is good too but Ubunto has more freedom. One thing I like about them is that you can install them alongside each other or windows easily.

Comment by Badweather on January 9, 2012 at 20:57 My recommendation is Ubuntu, it's the most developed and has the best documentation I think. It's used on servers a lot too so at the same time you can develop on an environment that you ultimately deploy to is a big plus. There are other flavors, I think openSuse is another that developers like as well. Never used it.
Here's a place you can go and plug your possible uses into a linux "chooser": http://www.linux-chooser.com/
Mostly you want well supported open source community around the distro and good documentation. My first choice will always be Ubuntu for the community size and thoroughness of the docs.
Comment by From_Boston on January 9, 2012 at 20:45 I'm thinking about learning how to use Linux because I'm very, very tired of hating my operating system and fighting against it. (Windows).
Anyone have suggestions on where one should start with Linux?

Where to begin…first - I apologize for this being so LONG everyone knows I hate wordy drawn out blogs so ... karma? Who knows.
There’s a small retaining pond behind the college apartments. I go back there several times a day; it’s a good area that forces me to have a bit of a walk. …

I was just endiing a campaign in Michigan against our Governor, and wondered what more was out there, what more can I do to help make my country the place I used to love, when I stumbled across a thing called Livestream, where people with the same purpose (supposedly) or like mindness could come together, chat, discuss, plan, and act and I was to say the least, excited. I started chatting and made so many friends and it was then I realized, that I had been wrapped up in my own small…
