Comment by fkem on January 25, 2013 at 22:44 Here are some Open Source programs, most of which I use at least occasionally. They work on Linux and or Windows and sometimes Mac.
Mumble of course is first, if you would like to join the meetings like Freeskilling, or Meet Occupy, or Global Round Table etc , or make a group to discuss topics of interest to you, or just chat, then this is the program you need. http://sourceforge.net/projects/mumble/?source=directory
Vlc Media Player, an amazing video and audio player, plays almost anything you throw at it. http://sourceforge.net/directory/os%3Alinux/freshness%3Arecently-up...
Office programs, Microsoft. .doc and other office files are compatible as well as many other types of files, they do more or less everything you want from an office suite, such as word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, formula editor, and database management.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/libreoffice.mirror/?source=directory
Handbrake, convert video files, even some dvds, Maybe use it to make videos compatible with your phone. http://sourceforge.net/projects/handbrake/?source=directory
Gimp and Gimpshop, photo/graphics editing software. Gimp is the original, Gimpshop has been modified to to be as familiar as possible to Photoshop users.
Gimp http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/
Gimpshop http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimpshop.mirror/?source=directory
Another graphics editor, I have not used, but its been around for some time now is Inkscape http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/?source=directory
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ
Audacity , audio capture and manipulation, covert to different audio formats, can copy the audio from video files such as youtube downloads and save them as .mp3 or other formats for your player or phone. you can mix audio files , record from your mic and mix over a music track. it does mulitrack mixing and manipulation. http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/?source=directory This is new to me but looks interesting. http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacityami/?source=directory
Stellarium, look at the stars in real time, or fast forward or back, from your location. It displays stars, constellations, planets, nebulae and others things like ground, landscape, atmosphere, etc. http://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium/?source=directory
Comment by fkem on January 23, 2013 at 0:53 Sourceforge, is a site which contains FREE software, for all operating systems. Give it a try if you want to do something with your computer and all you can find is expensive, possibly dodgy software. The code which makes up open source software is free for all to see, modify, share and use. http://opensource.org/licenses/ . The software is usually built by someone, then uploading code for an application , then someone else adds to it, uploads it, then someone adds to it and so on, just for the love of it. Freely sharing what they are good at, and letting others use their creation as they see fit. Could society as we know it learn from that way of being? Firefox is open source, Open Office is open source ( can read and modify microsoft documents, and most other documents), VLC is open souce, will play almost any media file you ask it to. Symbian , Android and lots of smartphone operating systems are open source, though app makers may not be.
Anyhow, if your looking for software to do something for you, check out sourceforge.net , type what you want the computer to do for you, into the search box, go to the dropdown tab nevt to SORT BY and select most poular, give the software a chance , if dosent work for you then uninstall it, easy. But you may be surprised at how good it is.

We are all unique and diverse, , each one of us has different individual talents and gifts, and also very similar human frailties On another website myself and others had a very long and very interesting discussion on arrogance / humility/ self esteem, being grounded knowing our own capabilities and appreciating and encouraging others capabilities, in otherwords sharing our skills in collaberation. I thought it worth sharing here.
I think there is a great…

There’s a small retaining pond behind the college apartments. I go back there several times a day; it’s a good area that forces me to have a bit of a walk. …
