I don't dig, I have raised beds with sloping sides and I cover the beds with a layer of home made compost topped with a thick natural mulch, usually straw, dried weeds that have not seeded, and plant residue after harvesting. I leave roots in the soil to add nutrition, decompose naturally and open drainage channels. I avoid walking on the beds to avoid compaction of the soil. In my experience this method has many advantages....1 Helps moderate the soil temperature2 Enhances the growth of fruit…Continue

I'm really interested in this type of gardening it seems most like what happens in untouched nature. And, from what I understand, it improves the yield and nutritional quality of whatever you're growing and can be done in a way to provide a natural defense against plant diseases or insect predators making pesticides unnecessary. I'm just starting out learning about this so don't have much to offer myself right now but if anyone knows more and can suggest books, etc. that would be great! :)Continue

healthy soil is the basis of a healthy tree of life, it means working closely with the natural systemhttp://www.soilfoodweb.com/sfi_approach1.htmla fukoaka inspired garden which allows the natural soil food web processes to increase your soils fertility and adds depth nutrients and structure to your soil. This method also makes weeding much easier and supresses them. The thick mulch conserves moisture in times of drought and prevents…Continue

Comment by rick todd on February 10, 2012 at 22:07 Hi, i've done some urban gardening. but, what is needed now is for people to organize urban peraculture. it is a collective task; if we try to keep the illusion of individualism and just ad on "sustainability" the revolution will fail and we will perish alone. our competitive advantage is our instinct for cooperation; we must need stop cooperating in our own enslavement, delivering ourselves dailly into the hands of those who can not love us.
Comment by tc on February 8, 2012 at 4:15 that vid is cool, tho i wish it showed more of what a see bomb is and how to make them, what seeds to use in your area...etc, great start. the biggest thing to me is get the right plants in the right stops and don't forget about them, go back and water them :)
Comment by tc on February 8, 2012 at 4:12 who cares what ads are on the side, they are helping to get seeds into the ground them i'm happy about that. the fact is that many companies are doing good thing to help off set the damage they do, the shit side is that the work in a $ $$$ world where they feel like they have to do some bad to do some good which altho is stupid, it's what $ tends to do to people

I was just endiing a campaign in Michigan against our Governor, and wondered what more was out there, what more can I do to help make my country the place I used to love, when I stumbled across a thing called Livestream, where people with the same purpose (supposedly) or like mindness could come together, chat, discuss, plan, and act and I was to say the least, excited. I started chatting and made so many friends and it was then I realized, that I had been wrapped up in my own small…
