Its getting close to the growing season again, and even though my first attempts at container gardening failed miserably, the enthusiasm of the mumble meetings (Wednesdays at 8pm, shown live on http://www.livestream.com/occupylsx), and this group planted the seed of possibilities in my psyche and am planning this years campaign. Part of this years campaign is to deal with caterpillars, slugs and too much water, adequate drainage will cure the water problem, and im researching watering ideas, but thats not what this post is about. Its the other things that eat my efforts, which hopefully can be put off doing so. by companion planting, and in the process give more flavour, and abundant crops in less space, while at the same time benefiting friendlier creatures. So Ive been trawling the webz again, and got some links to share, in the hope you find them .
If anyone has any practical experience of companion planting , myself, and Im sure others too, would be very very grateful for you sharing with us.

The potato is an important food. Usually it is grown from tubers, called seed potato, which are the same potatoes which we eat, except they are usually left to sprout, or chit. They can also be grown from raw peelings if they have eyes on them, that dosent mean you have to livestream them, though you can if you want, the eye is a hard black spot on the skin. There are also seeds in the fruit produced after flowering, known as True Potato Seed. The fruit has to be processed to get at the seeds, and the seeds take longer to grow than the tubers. I was hoping to collect some true seed, to experiment with, but a huge army of slugs and snails assaulted the plants rendering them leafless, and something ate through the stems, or heavy rain broke them, causing what was left to wither and die.It seems odd when the potato plant is related to deadly nightshade, and is poisonous, suppose theres no acounting for taste.
Its an amazing plant considering it was first cultivated, so they believe, seven to ten thousand years ago in south Peru and north Bolivia. It was taken from there to Europe by the Spanish invaders later in history. It has travelled to places as cold and far north as Scotland(compared to Peru), which is where most seed potatoes in th UK come from because they can be grown there without fear of blight. From the original plant found in Peru and Bolivia there are over four thousand varieties now grown.
To grow potatoes, you can lay the tuber on the ground and cover with straw apparently, no digging needed. Usually they are grown in ridges , lots of digging required. They can be grown in containers, from buckets to barrels or specially constructed boxes, which allow harvesting the potatoesfrom the bottom up. They are also grown in tyres ,bags and cages. I grew mine in heavy duty plastic bin liners, compost bags can be used too. They, apparently, can be grown indoors . There are varieties planted in august to be ready for Christmas, these are earlier in the season potatoes, planted again. When the tubers are harvested, they lay dormant for 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the variety and storage conditions, wherupon they can be chitted again and planted, though some very late ones are planted unchitted. And yes, try planting the ones you buy to eat, or their uncooked skins, no matter what their source.
Anyway, next post will for your entertainment, education and experimentation, be some links. Hope you find them useful. Not a lot of youtube links, because I dont tend to save many of them, its worth looking though, loads of great ideas.

The united nations has said that the egg is the most important food source for developed nations. So how do you make a chicken coup from pallets?
South Americans eat guinea pigs and they are excellent dog food in my opinion and are easier to feed than any animal I have ever encountered. Guinea Pigs also a good idea. They have been recommended as a micro livestock for the African Congo.

I was just endiing a campaign in Michigan against our Governor, and wondered what more was out there, what more can I do to help make my country the place I used to love, when I stumbled across a thing called Livestream, where people with the same purpose (supposedly) or like mindness could come together, chat, discuss, plan, and act and I was to say the least, excited. I started chatting and made so many friends and it was then I realized, that I had been wrapped up in my own small…
