Comment by gael.bage on May 4, 2012 at 11:50 When buying plants, no need to spend a fortune, learn to propagate, and make more for nothing.
Propagation is a cheap and easy way to get new plants.
Cane fruits eg blackberry and loganberry root easily if you peg down the tip of the cane in some soil, when it has roots and starts into growth just cut from the parent plant. Plants like tomatoes, busy lizzie, cape gooseberries grow roots if the base of the stem is placed in water for a few days, then can be potted up to make new plants.. On you tube there are loads of links for taking stem cuttings, or a good book on propagation is useful

Plan your raised beds, dig out topsoil from the paths to add height to the beds, you get more growing space if you don't use wood surrounds because you can plant the gently sloping sides.mulch with compost then add a dry mulch on top after rains have soaked the soil. For the mulch you can use straw, dried weeds that have not seeded, shredded paper dried lawn clippings etc. sow seedlings in modules and plant through the mulch or move mulch to one side and plant seeds then replace mulch around seedlings once they have grown a little. chipped bark or similar can be laid on path something permeable. When there is drought the mulch prevents evaporation conserving moisture, in heavy rains / flood, the mulch prevents soil run off and water drains onto the lower level paths instead of damaging roots by waterlogging. worms come right up to the mulch to take it into the soil adding wormcast fertilityand humus, conditioning the soil without the need to dig, - weeds are suppressed by the mulch too, any that do make their way through pull out easily as he soil is worked by the worms.and crumbly.
Here is a video of the method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugFd1JdFaE0

I was just endiing a campaign in Michigan against our Governor, and wondered what more was out there, what more can I do to help make my country the place I used to love, when I stumbled across a thing called Livestream, where people with the same purpose (supposedly) or like mindness could come together, chat, discuss, plan, and act and I was to say the least, excited. I started chatting and made so many friends and it was then I realized, that I had been wrapped up in my own small…
